GASTRECTOMY OET SPEAKING ROLE PLAY SCRIPT

Patient

Your preparation time is over. You can now start your role play. Don’t worry if I stop you when the time is up.

Good morning Patricia, Good to see you. I am your attending nurse Narso Andrew. I’m here to discuss your discharge, and provide you with some important information before you ahead home. How are you feeling about going home today?

Patient

Good morning Narso. I’m a bit anxious about going home but I’m looking forward to being in my familiar environment.

Thank you for sharing your feelings with me. It’s completely natural to have mixed emotions at this point, and Patricia, we will review everything together, and ensure you’re comfortable with the information. Firstly let me explain the reasons for your discharge.

Patient

Okay nurse.

Your progress has been remarkable. Your mobility has improved, Bowel movements are regular and the incision points are healing well. Patricia, Being in your own space can truly help in a quicker and smoother recovery.

Patient

Thank you for understanding. It’s reassuring to know my progress is good. Could you please remind me of the dietary restrictions to ensure a healthy recovery?

Of course Patricia, I’m here to help to promote healthy bowel movements. It’s important to have small, easily digestible meals, and stick to low fiber foods. Raw fruits can be a bit harsh on your system right now, so opting for cooked or processed fruits is advisable. We’ll make sure you have a dietary plan that suits you. How does that sound?

Patient

That sounds great. I appreciate your patience and guidance. Could you tell me more about preventing DVT post-operatively?

Absolutely Patricia, I’m here to support you through this. To prevent DVT, we will have you wear your compression stockings for the next two weeks. It might seem uncomfortable at first, but it’s crucial for your recovery. Additionally, we will guide you on administering self anticoagulant injections for up to 30 days. I’ll be here to demonstrate and guide you, and we can have a community nurse assist you if needed.

Patient

Thank you, it will be a great help Nurse. When should I schedule the stitches Removal?

You’ll need to have your stitches removed in about ten days. We’ll ensure you have a follow up appointment scheduled with your doctor to take care of that. You’ll also receive a discharge leaflet with all the necessary information. Including dietary advice, details about your medications, the follow up appointment, and helpline numbers. We are here for you every step of the way.

Patient

Thank you Narso, Your compassion and guidance mean a lot to me. I feel more at ease knowing you were there to support me.

You’re most welcome Patricia. Before we end this session, let me recap what we have covered so far. You have made excellent progress in your recovery and you are ready to go home. You have improved your mobility, had regular bowel movements, and healed your incision sites to keep your bowel movements healthy. You should eat small, easy to digest meals, and avoid raw fruits for the time being.

To prevent DVT, We will give you compression stockings to wear for two weeks, and teach you how to inject yourself with anticoagulants for 30 days. You will need to come back in ten days to have your stitches removed, and you have the follow up appointment with your doctor scheduled. We will also give you a discharge leaflet, that contains dietary advice, medication instructions, your follow up appointment details, and helpline numbers for any questions or concerns.
