CHEST PAIN AND DIZZINESS | OET SPEAKING ROLE PLAY SCRIPT

Patient

Your preparation time is over. You can now start your role play. Don’t worry if I stop you when the time is up.

Hello Patricia, Good morning My name is Narso Andrew. I am one of the registered nurses working in this emergency department.

Patient

Good morning nurse.

Have you had a comfortable night patricia?

Patient

Yes, I slept reasonably well but I am unhappy at being woken at 6 a.m..

Sorry for the inconvenience. I really understand how you have felt. However, the reason for you being waking up early is that the clinical observations have to be done before ward rounds.

Patient

Oh, is it?

Yes Patricia, It is the hospital procedure before the ward round. tThe clinical observations such as blood pressure, temperature, oxygen levels, etc., have to be checked.

Patient

Okay nurse.

Before proceeding further, Patricia I would like to know whether your symptoms like chest pain, dizziness are still present.

Patient

Well, the chest pain and dizziness aren’t there now but my heart feels as if it’s racing.

Good to hear that you don’t have chest pain and dizziness now. Try not to worry about the heartbeat rate because the current ECG readings says it is normal.

Patient

Oh, really?

Yes Patricia, Also I can reassure you that at present there is no evidence of a clinical problem. Nevertheless, we will continue to monitor your condition further.

Patient

Okay nurse, I continue to feel anxious.

Alright Could you ventilate your exact feeling, please?

Patient

Nurse, I had episodes of anxiety for about six months. But today it feels worse.

Okay For clarification, May I know whether you are taking medication for anxiety?

Patient

Actually, my GP prescribed the antidepressant Citalopram 01, I fortnight two weeks ago. But I haven’t been taking it regularly.

Okay And may I know why you didn’t take them as prescribed by your GP?

Patient

It is because I have read it’s for depression, and I am depressed.

Your thoughts are quite understandable. Perhaps I would like to share the information about the Citalopram with you.

Patient

Okay You may please.

Patricia Citalopram belongs to a category of drugs that can be used for anxiety as well as depression.

Patient

Oh, I see.

And the most important thing is that the medication has to be taken as prescribed without any failure. That is for a minimum of 4 to 6 dosage to be effective.

Patient

I didn’t know this before. If so, I would have taken it as prescribed without any failure.

I understand your word patricia. Now, what I advise you is to speak with your GP about medication if concerned.

Patient

Okay Sure, I will Nurse.

That’s great Patricia Furthermore, have you tried any other treatment options like relaxation techniques, counseling, etc.?

Patient

I haven’t tried anything else, but I like the sound of relaxation techniques.

I really appreciate your interest, patricia. Listening to the authentic relaxation sounds will be a great support. wWhile dealing with anxiety.

Patient

Yes, exactly Nurse.

I will give you the information leaflet, and also recommend a few websites for getting the authentic relaxation techniques.

Patient

Good to hear that nurse. Thank you, the information about relaxation techniques would be really useful.

My pleasure, patricia. So, may I know? Do you have any more concerns to be addressed?

Patient

Not at the moment, Nurse.

Alright Shall I have your consent to take your vitals now?

Patient

Sure, You may Please proceed, Nurse.

Thank you for your consent.

Patient

That is the end of your speaking role play, All the best.

Thank you.
